Robert Gjelaj ‘19: The varsity boys soccer team defeated the Dakota Cougars in the first round of districts on Monday, October 15. A goal scored ten minutes into the first half gave the Cougars the early lead. The Bulldogs stood strong defensively and scored late in the second half as Sam Vecchi ‘20 scored his second goal of the season providing hope to the Bulldogs while heading into overtime. Still tied after overtime, the team sent five representatives to take penalty kicks and won with the score of 3-2 with Robert Gjelaj ‘19 saving the final shot.
“I am really happy with the win last night against Dakota,” Reese Ford ‘20 said. I think the boys played amazing and it really payed off. We let up an early goal but we came back and won it.”
On Wednesday, October 17, the Bulldogs played the Eisenhower Eagles in the district semi-final and lost by a score of 1-0. The Eagles scored early in the first half but the Bulldogs kept pushing and had a couple of chances to tie the game up but failed to score. Goalkeeper Sean Hathaway ‘19 saved five Eagles shots in a valiant comeback effort from the team.
“I feel we had a great season our best since 2009, it feels great,” Hathaway said. “We finished one point back of first in the division and I think we could definitely beat Ike if we had the chance again.”
The Bulldogs finished the season 11-6-3, their best finish since the 2009 season. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a great season.
