Rachel Peil ‘22: The 2019 World Series kicked off on Tuesday, October 22 as the Houston Astros looked to defeat the Washington Nationals and win their second World Series title in just three years.
Although our Detroit Tigers found themselves far from being in the World Series, three former Detroit Tigers: Max Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez for the Nationals and Justin Verlander for the Astros, competed for the grand prize.
Detroit Tigers Outfielder, Mikie Mahtook said this about his former teammates, “The ultimate goal of a professional baseball player is the World Series, so I’m happy these guys are getting the opportunity to achieve that goal,” Mahtook said.
The 2014 Tigers team boasted a pitching staff that contained five World Series champions. Unfortunately, none of them won with Tigers, instead winning with the Astros, Nationals, and Boston Red Sox.
“I mean for three former Tigers to be in the World Series it could possibly show that they had the right pieces, but didn’t know how to put it together. It’s cool that no matter who wins the trophy, there will be at least one person who was on the Tigers getting a ring, “ Josh Phillips ‘22 said.
The Nationals took an early 2-0 lead, but the ‘Stros came back winning games three, four, and five, giving them a 3-2 lead, and only needing to win one more game to become World Series Champions once again.
With Verlander, the Astros ace on the mound, fans and the team hoped to win game six and claim the trophy. With Verlander being 0-5 in the World Series heading into the game, it wasn’t the most ideal situation as he lost once again and the Nationals won tying the series at 3-3.
The two teams battled it out at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas for game seven of the World Series – winner take all.
In the end, the Nationals won the World Series by a score of 6-2.
Fate was on the side of the Nationals, and with Sanchez and Scherzer, as they won their first World Series in franchise history.
Congrats to Scherzer and Sanchez on their historic win. The city of Detroit is proud of their former pitchers for winning it all.
