Jenna Knepper ‘21: On November 29, 2018, Romeo High student Theresa O’Connor ‘20 made her way down to the office greeted by the solemn faces of her parents. Her mysterious symptoms finally received a name. Cancer. A normal day at school filled with studies and pre test nerves, turned into the day Theresa began her battle against Leukemia.
“I went to school that morning and was pulled out of first hour. Both of my parents were in the school and told me the news once we got out to the car,” said Theresa.
The endless hours of chemotherapy, medication, and various medical tests became the norm for Theresa. Unable to attend school, dance, and her other passions, she looks back on her hardest days and remains grateful for everyone who continually supported her.
“When I was battling cancer my family was a huge help. I definitely couldn’t have done it without them. I also relied on my friends and even my nurses who were always there for me,” said Theresa.
An event that now carries a new meaning to Theresa, Romeo Community Schools holds the 11th annual Watchdog football game on October 4th at 7:00pm. While the Watchdog game raises awareness to those battling cancer and those who lost the battle, it also honors those who won, like Theresa.
“Before I had Leukemia, Watchdog was just a football game to me. It didn’t really mean that much even though I knew it was extremely important,” said Theresa. “Now, it is so much more than just a game. I feel very connected to the Watchdog game and it means a lot to me after what I have been through”.
The Romeo community stands by Theresa to honor what she fought through and celebrate her cancer free future.
“Seeing all of the fundraisers and support is really awesome. I have seen so many people donating and you can never donate enough to this cause,” said Theresa.
The abundant support given to Theresa and other Romeo community members affected by cancer, creates an atmosphere of hope for a brighter future. Come to Romeo’s Watchdog football game on October 4th at 7:00pm as we honor Theresa O’Connor and her triumphant battle against cancer.
