Kade Messner ‘17-Competing against Dakota High School in the District semi-finals, the boys soccer team lost 2-0. Holding a 2-14-2 record, the hardy Bulldog’s season came to an end.
Scoring at 26:41, Austin Nowak ‘16 from Dakota found the back of the net, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
“Even though they scored first, we knew the game was not over,” Kyle Smith ‘16 said.
Goal tender, Robert Gjelaj ‘19 stepped up for the Bulldogs, allowing only one goal in the first half and holding the Cougars scoreless for most of the second.
With 12:59 to play in the match, the boys earned their best chance at scoring with a penalty kick. The Dakota goalkeeper, Aiden Genette ‘18 dove right and saved it.
Defeating the Bulldogs 2-0, the Cougars play Eisenhower High School in the District Championship later this week.
“It is going to be tough since soccer is over now, it was my life,” Smith said. “The team was more than a team, it was like a family. As seniors we knew this was our last season so we wanted to make it last, and start a good foundation for the younger players.”
