Adam Sebastian ‘19: A culture changing season has come to a close for the Boys Soccer team. With new head coach Vincent Vasilevski leading the team, the team finished with five wins and four ties. Despite a losing record, the team accomplished many goals during the season: the program won their first playoff game since the 2009 season, they defeated Eisenhower High School for the first time since 2009, and finished third in their district, learning a lot along the way.
“The team bonded well and we established a lasting brothership,” Eric Wadell ‘18 said. “We learned to work harder than we ever have.”
This year’s squad boasts three all-district players: Christian Gjelaj ‘18, Ryan Danaj ‘19, and Mateo Giulianelli ‘20. Gjelaj, a three-year varsity player, finished fourth in the conference with ten goals. Danaj, another three-year varsity player, finished the season as the team’s defensive most valuable player. Giulianelli, only a sophomore, completed his stellar first varsity season scoring multiple game-winning goals.
The team loses seven seniors from the 2017 season: Eric Wadell, Christian Gjelaj, Atticus Crimmins, Joe Moore, Dominic Nikprelaj, John Messing, and Matt Kalafut. This year’s class leaves behind an encouraging project for the future, feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished and left behind.
“I think Romeo Soccer is in a better state than before,” Wadell said. “I am proud and we will do better next year.”
The returning players look forward to next season where the team gets another shot at a district title.
