Nick Blankenburg – Coming into the weekend the Romeo High School varsity hockey team had a record of 3-0-0. After the competitive 2 game weekend, the Bulldogs came out with a 4-1-0 record. They beat Sault Ste. Marie 8-3. Many players helped contribute to the high scoring affair. Junior captain Nick Blankenburg with a pair of goals, a hat trick from senior captain Mitch Bidus, and also a goal coming from juniors Blake Gabler and Logan Jenuwine. Knocking off the number 9 team in division 3 is a huge accomplishment early on for the team.
The very next day, the Bulldogs traveled to Mcmorran Arena in Port Huron to take on the heavily favored Port Huron Northern Huskies, ranked number 7 in division 2. The Bulldogs jumped up to a quick start when senior Matteo Mazur scored a few minutes into the first period. Minutes later, Blankenburg scored on a breakaway to put the bulldogs up 2-0 just 10 minutes into the first period. The Huskies did not back down, and answered back swiftly. More goals coming from Jenuwine, Blankenburg, and Gabler, lead to overtime. Just minutes into overtime, Port Huron Northern was able to capitalize on a rebound in front of the net to end the game.
The Bulldogs next game is Wednesday, December 10th, where they will face off against the Anchor Bay Tar Heels at Glacier Pointe Ice Arena in Port Huron.
