Jack Stager ‘22: The 2022 Romeo Golf season kicked off at Top Golf, when tryouts took place on March 14th. Last year, the Romeo Bulldogs finished in 9th place year out of 36 teams in the state. After losing quite a few seniors, the Bulldogs are a very young team as they are projected to have 10 returning players after having roughly 20 last season.

Head Coach Steve Himmelsbaugh gave his thoughts on the season and what he is seeing throughout tryouts this week.

“I love the energy this group of kids is giving, this year is looking to be really solid,” Himmelsbaugh said. “Even though we lost a few seniors last season, we have a lot of young leaders ready to get started and push this team to the next level. I’m looking to have roughly 15 guys this year so I’m intrigued to see the competition and what each athlete will do to push their game to the next level.”

Many student athletes at Romeo are looking to try out for the golf team as the past two years the numbers the team has produced for tryouts have been steadily increasing as golf is on the rise as one of the most popular sports amongst young teenagers. Assistant coach and 2021 Romeo alumni Connor Holas gave his thoughts on the amount of press and interest the golf team has gotten over the past few years.

“First off, I’m so happy to have the opportunity to help out Coach Himmelsbaugh this year; especially with the number of studs and young athletes we have on the team,” Holas said. “I’m super excited to check these guys’ skills out at Top Golf this week and analyze the skill we have. I can’t wait to get started with these guys.”

Some notable courses the team will be playing this year consist of Fortress GC (golf club), Gowaine CC (country club), Indianwood GC, The Orchards GC, and many more exciting tracks around the state of Michigan. This MAC Red powerhouse is ready to get started and even more excited to dominate the competition, especially with the young talent they have.
