Justin McNulty ‘20: After two overtimes and a long, physically draining game, Macomb Dakota Cougars defeated the Romeo Bulldogs by a final score of 37-30.
Both teams came into Friday night with a 5-1 record and as top 25 teams in the state.
The Cougars got off to a fast start, breaking a 40 yard run for a touchdown on their opening drive and going ahead 7-0.
Romeo answered back as Chandler Reno ‘19 powered the ball into the endzone, and Mitchell Hardy ‘19 added a safety to put the Bulldogs up 9-7 heading into the locker room.
After the break, both teams offenses seemed to get rolling as the scoring began to pick up.
Soon after Dakota took a 14-9 lead, running back Brock Horne ‘19 broke an outside run for 54 yards to the endzone to put the Bulldogs back on top.
As the game progressed, Romeo found themselves down 23-15 late in the 4th quarter.
Wide receiver Ryan Heimbuch ‘19 scored on a reverse jet sweep before making an incredible grab on the two point conversion pass from quarterback Jack Wendt ‘19.
With the contest tied at 23 at the end of regulation, the game headed into overtime.
In overtime, Dakota’s offense would prove too strong for the Bulldogs defense, who failed to keep up with the pace of the Cougars.
In the second overtime, Reno added his second touchdown of the game, but the Dawgs still fell 37-30.
“I think we need to stay more mentally focused and tackle better while on defense to avoid creating any big plays,” Michael Severini ‘20 said.
Despite losing a five game winning streak, the Bulldogs still find themselves in the MAC Red championship race with one remaining conference matchup when they host Chippewa Valley High School on Friday, October 12, beginning at 7:00 pm
