Justin McNulty ‘20: Fresh off a heartbreaking double overtime lost to Dakota, Romeo looked to rebound this past Friday against undefeated, top ranked Chippewa Valley High School.
The Bulldogs rushed out of the gate hungry for an upset and eager to claim the title of MAC Red champions.
Running back Brock Horne ‘19 capped off the opening driving with a run from the one yard line, putting the Dawgs up seven to nothing.
Chippewa Valley battled back and got ahead to a 13-7 before Horne added his second touchdown of the first half, with 53 seconds remaining the the 2nd quarter.
Abe Mayfield ‘20 recovered the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, giving Romeo the much needed momentum coming out of the locker room.
A few plays later, Horne punched in his third touchdown of the game, with another one yard power run.
After a mishap on special teams and a quick score for the Big Reds, Romeo’s offense found themselves with the ball right back in their hands.
Brian St.Clair ‘21 took the majority of the handoffs on the drive and eventually found his way into the endzone to put Romeo back up by seven.
Chippewa Valley went on to return another kickoff for a touchdown, finding themselves starting to pull away on the scoreboard.
Despite a late push led by Ryan Heimbuch ‘19 and a tremendous one-handed touchdown catch from quarterback Jack Wendt ‘19, the Bulldogs fell short of victory, losing to the Big Reds 41-34.
“Our team needs to start finishing off games and better have the win-or-go-home mindset this week, since it feels like the playoffs are starting a week early for us,” Heimbuch said.
To keep their playoff hopes alive, the Bulldogs need to win their next game. On Friday, October 19, the Romeo Bulldogs visit the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils, the undefeated MAC White Champions. Come out and support the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
