Leanna Harris ‘18: Each year, Powder Puff is full of flags, key players and entertainment. Last night, Romeo High School juniors took on the seniors in the annual Powder Puff football fundraiser, where the seniors won, 7-6 .
There were several people who participated in the key plays throughout the game. On the senior end, Coaches Nolan Kare, and Brendan Desmet both agreed that Maricela Macias, Courtney Henderson, and Sydney Mazur, played huge roles in the victory. Desmet said that Henderson was the MVP on the defensive and Macias on the offensive. He also included Mazur due to her touchdown that proved to be the winning score early on in the game. One of the more memorable moments for the seniors included Carly Wilson, when Wilson ran a 65 yard touchdown, which was eventually called back because of a flag, voiding the run.
Determining the outcome of the game, quarterback Madison Jones ran in the extra point after the seniors only score to take the 7-6 lead.
For the juniors, Coach Rhett Stahovec said that Madison McMillan and Amber Flinn were two of the team’s main players. Flinn, the juniors wide receiver, scored the juniors only touchdown, keeping the score close for the remainder of the game. Flinn even acquired an injury on her touchdown. Flinn was kneed in the shoulder and kicked in the head after diving to catch the ball, Flinn walked off the field but is unsure if she sustained a concussion. McMillan was also considered an MVP due to her speed at running back. Both juniors and seniors can agree that when the ball was in McMillan’s possession, she was dangerous and gained yardage. One of the memorable moments for the girls was when they circled up, and stormed the coaches after Luke Durham did a backflip in the center.
Each year, the the fun, yet competitive nature of the girls comes out to participate in the fundraiser for the senior Prom and to kick off Homecoming week.
“The practices leading up to the game are always exciting, it brings our class together. Our main goal is to have fun, beating the juniors is just an added bonus,” Mazur said.
