BrookeLynn Tremblay ‘17 – An opportunity to express creativity and promote a healthy lifestyle has been offered to students county-wide by the Macomb County Board of Commissions in conjunction with the Macomb County Health Department. Students from grades 9-12 have the opportunity to make their ideas come to life on a mural in one of three Macomb County Health Department locations. The woman behind it all, Laura Murphy, feels it is important for workers to be inspired each day by the mural and make good choices about their personal health.

“The great thing about this Mural Project is that it is beneficial not only the employees and students who have worked on it, but the entire community as well,” Murphy said. “Any person walking through the door of these health centers will be greeted by these pieces of art. We’re hoping by incorporating a health conscious theme, it will enhance the environment of these locales, and inspire members of the community to think of other ways they can ‘Grow up Healthy in Macomb’.”

Once students put together a group, and ideas have been drawn out, each group must have and adult (18 or older) or staff member of the school oversee the production of each mural and put together a time frame for the students to get together and paint.

Three groups will be chosen through a public voting process and panel. Entries will be put on county websites and Facebook pages. Open voting will happen from November 30th to December 4th. The top 10 entries will go before a panel of county representatives who will then choose the top 3. Winners will be announced on December 14th and each group must have their mural completed by April 29th, 2016.

To apply, groups must complete the attached Application Cover Sheet, which can be found at, and provide a full-color rendition of the proposed mural on the Proposed Mural sheet. The completed application must be submitted by November 13th at 5 p.m. to Macomb County Board of Commissioners, One S. Main St., Ninth Floor, Mount Clemens, MI 48043 or via email to
