Elizabeta Lulati ‘19: With all of the events occuring in the upcoming months students, teacher, and faculty draw a blank on the words ‘National Athletic Training Month.’ Occuring in March, National Athletic Training Month brings attention to what an athletic trainer undertakes for students and allows the community to appreciate their work. Ms. Phillips, Athletic Trainer for Romeo, works hard to provide for the students of Romeo High School during school and sporting events.
“March is National Athletic Training Month, meant to recognize certified athletic trainers for their commitment to helping people by providing preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Certified athletic trainers are healthcare professionals,” Phillips states. “Highly educated and dedicated to the job at hand, athletic trainers most likely are found in high schools and colleges, corporations, professional sports, the military, performing arts and clinics, hospitals, and physicians offices. They provide compassionate care for all.”
The Romeo Athletic Training Department participates in this event by running a few fundraisers and social media campaigns. During the first week of the month (March 4- March 8). Ms. Phillips and others plan to sell Gatorade Energy Chews, Gatorade Protein Shakes, and wristbands during lunches on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as well as in the athletic training room after school every day. The wrist bands and shakes sell for two dollars and chews for one dollar. All proceeds go towards the athletic training department and a new training room at the high school.
Romeo and other MAC schools compete during National Athletic Training month to see which school acquires the most student support. Romeo asks students to tweet out why their athletic trainer’s the best, what they accomplish daily , or even just what an athletic trainer performs in general. The favorite post receives a special thank you gift from the Athletic Training Department. More information will be located on the Romeo High School Athletic Training twitter page at @Romeo_ATC as March approaches.
