Nick Blankenburg ’16 & Steven Morris ’16: Improving to 18-1, the Romeo Varsity Hockey team defeated three top 15 teams in Division 2 at the Chelsea Public High School Showcase.
Entering their first game, the Bulldogs defeated the number 10 ranked in Division 2 Plymouth 7-3, on Thursday night in Chelsea. Being a high tempo first period, the Bulldogs shot out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Frankie Ruffino ‘17 and Logan Jenuwine ‘16 scored twice, while Nick Blankenburg ‘16, Luke Kaczor ‘17, and Jake Petri ‘17 added one goal each.
The best team the Bulldogs played all weekend was number 11 ranked Escanaba.
Being close from start to finish, the team pulled out a 5-3 victory. Blankenburg and Jenuwine ‘16 bother finished with two goals, also adding a goal Brett Lanski ‘17 scored once.
Trying to earn a clean sweep on the weekend, the hockey team did just that when they defeated number 12 ranked Salem 6-2. Adding to his great weekend, Jenuwine completed a hat trick to lead the team to victory. Andrew Cate ‘17 scored once and Frankie Ruffino A.K.A Frank the Tank scored twice.
“It feels good where we’re at right now, this weekend was a big test for us,” Ruffino said. “We have some tuning up to do a couple more big tests coming ahead for us, our goal is to win our last game of the season and that’s been our goal since day one, March is all that matters to us, to go 5-0 in the month of March and win a state title.”
Helping the Bulldogs win and having an outstanding weekend, goal tender Nolan Kare A.K.A Glover Daddy, played all three games. Kare leads the state goalies in wins with a total of 18.
Playing their next two games on the road, the Bulldogs take on Forest Hills North Eastern and Portage Central in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday.
