Nick Blankenburg ‘16 – Continuing their 11 game non losing streak, the Romeo high school hockey team defeated the Plymouth Predators 5-3 and tied the Marquette Redmen 2-2 in the Chelsea showcase over the past week.
Thursday was an early away game at 4:00 in Chelsea against the Predators. It was a close game until the final minute, when senior Matteo Mazur scored an empty net goal with 10 seconds left to put the Bulldogs up by 2. Junior Nick Blankenburg scored a goal, and junior Logan Jenuwine had 2. Senior Mitch Bidus put 1 in the net as well.
Saturday was another tight matchup against the Marquette Redmen in an early game at 10:30 a.m. away in Chelsea.
The two teams were very evenly matched and everyone knew it would come down to the final minutes. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the second period.
In the third the Redmen scored a decisive goal. Junior Logan Jenuwine got the puck and put it past the goaltender with 9 seconds left in the game to send in to overtime.
No team scored in OT, ending the game in a tie.
Improving to a record of 17-3-1, the Bulldogs have only lost 1 game in regulation time.
“Our past 2 games were a great stepping stone towards playoffs that are coming up in March,” junior Luke Kaczor stated. “I am looking forward to the rest of the season and the team needs to keep high tempo practices in order to prepare for playoffs. There is only 4 games left in the regular season and I am looking forward to it”
With only 4 games left in the season, the Bulldogs only have 1 home game left, and 2 MAC Red league games. Their next game is Wednesday, February 11th away against St. Clair Shores Unified.
