Paul Hurley ’16 –

First, they were Mac Red champions.

Second, they were district champions.

Third, they were regional champions.

Finally, they are the 2014 Class A Volleyball State Champions.

In a dramatic five game series versus Novi, Romeo finished the season as victors, claiming the State Championship.

Battling the nerves and emotions of a championship game, Romeo came out ready for a tough Novi team. After exchanging points throughout the game, the dogs prevailed with a 25-22 victory. Game two Romeo continued their momentum and escaped with a 25-23 win.

Novi answered back in games three and four, with a score of 25-11 and 27-25.

With the season on the line and momentum going back and forth between the two teams, Romeo took charge of the court as they dominated game 5 with a score of 15-9. The final kill of the game came from outside hitter, Gia Milanna ’16. Milanna showed her experience and poise under pressure with her two years of all-state seasons already in her repertoire, she contributed 29 kills to the Bulldog victory.

The key to the teams success was their ability to work as one, showing great unity and skill. Multiple players stepped up with huge plays, such as Jodie Kelly, who contributed 13 kills and 11 digs and the outstanding defense the bulldogs showed against a determined Novi team.

Of course, there was that other “teammate” that provided the lady bulldogs with motivation and encouragement to bring home the win, the Romeo fans. The Romeo fans traveled by busses and carpooled to Battle Creek to support the team. The fans provided the team with  support and beamed with pride.

Congratulations to the Romeo Varsity Volleyball team as they bring Romeo their first ever State Volleyball Championship. The girls will share in their victory as they return to a community filled with pride and happiness. The lady Bulldogs will be received by their fans tonight at RHS from 9 t0 10 to welcome them home and congratulate them on their championship .
