Liliana Venditti ‘17- Long last, the wait is over! The day is finally here. Eager boys and girls around the world have waited for this very day, this special holiday. Our calendars have been dated, marked and circled. Work has been taken off for the lucky select few. Hundreds have booked their flights, and made arrangements to awake before the crack of dawn for the thrilling event. America waiting, anticipating the important question, will there be six more months of this horrendous snow filled winter?

“I countdown to Groundhogs Day every year, it’s my favorite holiday!” Kellie Sinicki ‘17 said.

The notorious, Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary, or Phil Groundhog for short, will be the star of the show as he predicts the future of our nation.

“Punxsutawney Phil is my hero, I tuned into Pennsylvania Public Broadcast and was completely intoxicated by all the Pennsylvanians and their obsession with this groundhog,” Liam O’Curran ‘16 said.

Back in the good ol’ days of the 1700’s, German settlers brought the tradition known as Candlemas Day, which is a Christian holiday that celebrates three different occasions according to Overtime this celebration has lead to Americans eagerly awaiting a groundhog to predict the weather.

According to the Punxsutawney newspaper, the madness that is Groundhogs Day started on February 2nd 1886. The fortune teller Phil is possibly one of the most sought after celebrities. Paparazzi have caught Phil with Ronald Reagan. Not only has he been given presidential treatment, he has also been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, stated CNN.

Phil is a front-runner for the idea of connecting with fans through cellphones. As of 2010, Americans around the US can sign up to receive a text with Phil’s prediction. He beat the Kardashians and their apps by like 5 years.
Needless to say, the biggest event of the 2016 year is coming up rapidly, and I will be purchasing my ticket to Pennsylvania as soon as possible to meet America’s sweetheart, Phil.
