Austin Taseski ‘21: The Bulldogs faced off against the Davison Cardinals on Friday, November 1st for their first playoff game of the 2019 season, in a highly anticipated matchup.
Starting off the game strong, the Bulldogs recovered a fumble on the Cardinals very first offensive play. This gave them the ball inside the Cardinal’s fifty yard line and set up an eventual touchdown run by Brian St. Clair ‘21, putting Romeo up 7-0 early in the first quarter.
Soon after, Brandt Messner ‘20 recorded his second interception in the last two weeks. Off of a heads up play, he kept his feet in bounds after a tip passed and caught the ball inside Cardinal territory again.
The Bulldogs then mounted another scoring drive capped off when quarterback Bret Miller ‘20 found the endzone. This improved the lead to two scores at the end of the first quarter.
The Cardinals offense answered back and scored a touchdown run to reduce the lead to 14-7.
But the Bulldog’s couldn’t be stopped, as St. Clair scored his second touchdown of the day from a 73 yard run.
The Cardinals would go on to score off of another run making the score 21-14 at halftime.
Soon after the half started, Davison tied the game at 21 a piece.
The Bulldogs offense struggled in the second half to put up points, as the Cardinals would go on to score a 95 yard touchdown pass, and another touchdown run in the final minutes of the game.
The final score of the game ended 35-21, in favor of Davison. The Cardinals put an end to the great and successful Bulldog season. The Bulldog seniors were clapped off the field for their commitment and success in the program all four years at the highschool.
Romeo’s football program has made the MHSAA playoffs 16 years in a row, and the Bulldogs hope to continue that streak in the 2020 season.
