Claire Spitz ‘20: Quickly approaching, Romeo’s annual Charity Week draws near. Our hard-working Student Council created a packed two-week schedule for the bulldogs to enjoy, as well as a new spin on Hoco 2.0.
At the heart of Charity Week is this years charity: Care House of Oakland County. The Care House advocates for, protects, and counsels abused foster children, as well as helps low-income families with the tools to raise healthy and happy kids. Romeo being a community of people that treats each other like family, our Student Council wanted to focus on helping other families in desperate need. Care House of Oakland County rescues these abused children and raises up all who need it.
In order to raise the most amount of money possible for this wonderful charity, there will be events leading up to Charity Week to raise money before it even starts! Starting on Tuesday, February 4th, tickets for this year’s black-lit dance begin. Each ticket is $10, and will be a wristband that you must bring at the door along with your student ID. There will also be other activities during the dance, such as games, concessions, and a screening of that night’s game. Students are encouraged to wear neon and white clothing to this year’s dance. Bring your facepaint, glowsticks, bandanas, etc.! The Charity Week dance will be on February 8th, the Saturday before Charity Week officially begins, due to Mid-Winter Break beginning the weekend after Charity Week.
The dance isn’t the only thing to look forward to that week! A fan favorite, Powderbuff takes place some time in the future. With just a $5 admission fee, come and cheer on your favorite boys play volleyball as they put in their blood, sweat, and tears into this tournament. In the first round, the Sophomores (black) will verse the Seniors (red), and the Freshmen (grey) will verse the Juniors (white). In the second round, the winners will play the winners in order to see who will be crowned the champions of Powderbuff 2020.
Wrapping up the week on February 7th, our cheer teams will be hosting their competition right here at home. Support our biggest supporters by showing up and cheering them on! It is a $5 admission fee to come and watch. Not only do you get to see your talented cheerleaders, but you can also participate in the miracle minute that will be happening during the competition. The first one for our charity, Student Council will have just 60 seconds to collect as much money as they can from the crowd! Show out for our amazing teams at 7:30pm that night, and help to raise some money while you are there!
Moving forward to the official start of Charity Week, Monday, February 10th, holds Hawaiian Day. Wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt, lai, sunglasses, and sunscreen to school! Charity Week shirts will be available to purchase for $15 in the School Store starting on Monday as well. That night is an Art and Jakes fundraiser. Grab some food with your friends and family that night and a percentage of your meal will go straight to our charity!
Monday features a proud Romeo tradition: Mr. Bulldog. Starting at 7:00pm with a $5 admission fee, the greatest show of all time will begin in the brand new auditorium. Strutting their stuff, the boys competing for the coveted Mr. Bulldog title will have to go through different rounds of games, trivia, and a talent portion in order to take the crown. There will also be a miracle minute during the show as well, so make sure to bring your loose change with you!
Tuesday, February 11th, is Crazy Day. A classic spirit day, students are encouraged to pull out their wackiest attire! Whether it be a strange hat, tall socks, crazy hair, bright clothing, or all of the above, make sure to go all out for this day! With Tuesday, there also comes plenty of after school activities to choose from. Romeo’s boys basketball teams will be playing at home all afternoon, starting with Freshmen at 4:00pm, to JV at 5:30pm, and ending with Varsity at 7:00pm. There is also a Varsity hockey game at 5:30pm at home: the Suburban ice rink. At all sporting events there will be a miracle minute to raise money for the Care House of Oakland County as well.
Roll out of bed on Wednesday, February 12th, because it is PJ Day! Come to school cozy in your favorite robe, slippers, and pajamas.
Bring on the rivalry, because Thursday, February 13th, is College Day. Sport your favorite team’s colors, logo, and bring all the team spirit you can! Once again, basketball will have the gym all afternoon with a $5 admission fee. Girls Freshmen will be at 4:00pm, with Girls JV at 5:30, and finally Girls Varsity at 7:00pm. Once again, there will be a miracle minute at all games – every penny counts!
To end the week, Friday, February 14th, is the Charity Week Shirt Day! Show off your support for the Care House as they receive their check at the pep rally that day. All of your favorite performers will be showcasing their performances at the pep rally as always. That night our Boys Basketball teams will be playing at home, with Freshmen at 4:00pm, JV at 5:30pm, and Varsity at 7:00pm. There will be miracle minutes happening at all games, however, the Varsity game will also give fans a chance to win raffle baskets and the 50/50 raffle run by Student Council.
All money raised during these two weeks will be given to the Care House of Oakland County. Romeo is known for its big heart, so make sure to donate whatever you can, in which every way you can, in order to help those that truly need it.
