Austin Taseski ‘21: On Friday, October 11th the Bulldogs faced the 4-2 Dakota Cougars, in a highly anticipated with both teams fighting for the MAC Red title.
Logan Iafrate ‘20 started off the game, picking off Dakota on their first drive. This allowed Brian St Clair ‘21, a few plays later, to push his way into the endzone to give the Bulldogs an early lead of 7-0.
As Dakota got the ball back hoping to try and even up the score, Justin McNulty ‘20 caught the ball for another interception, taking it back to the three yard line. Ryan Czapski ‘20 then ran in the endzone on the very next play, and after a blocked PAT, the Bulldogs were up 13-0 in the first quarter.
At the end of the first, the score remained 13-0. The Bulldogs defense gave the offense great scoring opportunities on key turnovers.
Soon after the second quarter began, Dakota came bouncing back with a long touchdown pass of 80 yards. This made it a one possession game.
Although the Cougars scored, the Bulldogs did not fail to prove their defensive dominance.
After the Bulldogs drove the field, they capitalized once again, as St. Clair scored his second touchdown of the game, making the score 20-7 at the end of the half.
Coming into the second half, the Bulldogs had lots of momentum. Czapski would go on to score his second touchdown of the game to make the score 27-7.
The defense kept their composure as the 3rd quarter ended.
Later in the fourth, as the clock wound down, Ben Weber ‘20 found the endzone off a great pass from Bret Miller ‘20. This would increase the lead to a score of 34-7.
The Bulldog defense would not let up as Dyontay Gomes ‘20 forced a safety at the end of the game to make the final score 36-7. The win clinches them a spot in the MHSAA playoffs.
Romeo faces the 7-0 Chippewa Valley Big Reds on Friday, October 18th for the MAC Red Championship.
