Jack Stager ‘22: The Romeo Varsity boys golf team golf in their first match today, Thursday, April 14th against Eisenhower and Grosse Pointe South in a tri match.
Romeo’s varsity consists of six players, three juniors, one sophomore, one freshman, and one senior; which is a very diverse and young team. Head coach Steve Himmelsbaugh is very excited to see how this young team performs today in their first match.
After Thursday the varsity squad travels to Laingsburg for the Wolfpack Invitational. Sophomore Dominic Delaura ‘24 and Junior Matthew Himmelsbaugh ‘23 are looking to defend their title as last year they won the “scramble” portion of the competitive tournament.
Dominic Delaura gave his thoughts on the tournament and what he and Mathew need to do to come away with another victory.
“I think we have the talent to go back to back this year. Matthew and I play amazing together and I’m even more excited to see how the team performs regardless,” Delaura said.
Romeo beat Eisenhower by 13 strokes while falling to GPS by ironically the same amount. Dominic Delaura ‘24 led the varsity squad with a 40, while Matthew Himmelsbaugh ‘23 followed with a 43.
The boys then went into the Wolfpack Tournament with some momentum and finished second overall as a team. Matthew Himmelsbaugh ‘23 and Dominic Delaura ‘24 did defend their title for the “scramble” portion of the event; winning with a 66. Giorgio Ruffino ‘23 and Max Fountain ‘25 came away with the first place out a victory in the “best ball” portion of the event.
All in all, the boys had a very successful beginning week to the season, starting 1-1 and coming in second place in their first tournament.
The boys look to this Saturday where Varsity where they compete at The Fortress golf course in Frankenmuth while JV will have a tournament as well, at Hudson Mills. After the tournament, the boys then prepare for Monday 4/26, as they will have another tournament, this time at the Indianwood golf course. The boys are off and running, and the only thing stopping them is themselves.
