Elliott Byrd ‘22: On Thursday, February 20th the Romeo Bulldogs faced off against the MAC Red division leaders, the Dakota Cougars. Previously in December, Romeo faced off against the Cougars and got demolished 81-63. The Bulldogs knew it would be a very challenging match.
The Bulldogs came out of the gates strong, leading at the end of the first quarter. Although Romeo started off hot they fizzled out after the first. The Cougar’s defense started to strengthen, holding Romeo to only 53 points the whole game. Ryan Rollins ‘20 of Dakota had 27 points and dominated on the boards as well grabbing 12 rebounds. The Bulldogs couldn’t match the potent Cougar’s offense and it showed on the final score, Dakota 76 Romeo 53.
On Tuesday, February 25, Romeo matched up with L’anse Creuse North in the first game of the consolation bracket. L’anse Creuse North faced Ford in their first round match and lost by 14 points. This was Romeo’s first match with North this season and they matched up evenly with one another. The game remained close throughout all four quarters. Although Romeo played great throughout the whole game, L’anse Creuse squeaked out 3 more points than the Bulldogs. With this loss, Romeo fell to the seventh place game.
On Friday, February 28 Romeo and Chippewa Valley found themselves in a battle for seventh place in the MAC Tournament. Coming into the game New Haven beat Chip by 4 to move them to the seventh place game. Chippewa came out of the gates with very high intensity. Chippewa grabbed the lead and didn’t slow down at all and there was nothing Romeo could do. Romeo lost by 15, the final score was 53-38.
Unfortunately, Romeo lost every game in the MAC tournament and finished 8th place. Look for Romeo to bounce back against Cousino on March 3rd.
