Elliott Byrd ‘22: The Romeo Varsity Boys Basketball team split their first two games losing to Chippewa Valley and beating Grosse Pointe North. However, there is little time to celebrate wins and dread losses with games scheduled every two days for the Bulldogs.

On Thursday, February 18th the Bulldogs carried their momentum over from their last game and dominated against Henry Ford.

The Bulldogs pounced on the Falcons from the opening tip off, ending the first quarter with a five point lead. Romeo, built on their lead by scoring 15 points in the second quarter. This expanded their lead to 12 points. In the third quarter, Romeo’s stout defense only allowed 24 points throughout the whole second half. Final score Romeo 58, Henry Ford 30, the Bulldogs expanded their win streak to two games in a row. 

On Saturday, February 20th the Bulldogs looked to continue their winning streak to three games in a row but they faced a very tough, Oxford Wildcat team.

After the first quarter, Romeo led by only three points and held Oxford to six points throughout the first quarter. Oxford’s offense picked up in the second quarter scoring 12 while Romeo scored 16. At halftime, the Bulldogs went up 25 to 18. Coming out of halftime the Bulldogs added to their lead by one point. At the beginning of the first quarter, the score shifted to 29 to 37. However, the Wildcats weren’t done as they clawed their way back into the game. With 10 seconds left in the game, Oxford led 43 to 42. Logan Rolfs ‘22 refused not to let his team lose as he hoisted a three that hit nothing but nylon with only 2.5 seconds left in the game. Final Score Romeo 45, Oxford 43, the Bulldogs expanded their lead to three games in a row. 

Logan Rolfs explained his thought process through the game winning shot.

“What went through my mind while taking the shot was I gotta make it for the win. Then after hitting it I was happy to win the game for the team,” Rolfs said.

After winning three games in a row Romeo looked to make it four as they battled against the New Haven Rockets on Monday, February 22nd.

The Bulldogs came into this game with a ton of momentum. Romeo jumped out ahead into a 16-6 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, New Haven challenged the Bulldogs a little bit, cutting the lead to 8 points.  However, Romeo never gave up their lead and ended up winning by ten points. Final score Romeo 57, New Haven 47. 

Big man Blake Woodward ‘21 gave his input on how the team performed.

“I think we came out strong in the first and 2nd quarter. After the first half we started to get ahead of ourselves and we started to let them back in the game. But we knew we needed to hold them off so they couldn’t get the lead,” Woodward said.

After losing their first game the Bulldogs beat every team since, improving their record to an impressive 4-1. With the Bulldogs rolling on a 4 game winning streak look for them to try to continue their hot streak against Eisenhower on Wednesday, February 24
