Cameron Kemp ‘19: After ending their 2-1 series win over Grosse Pointe North, the Baseball team played a home doubleheader against Lutheran High North on Saturday, April 21. Being a non-league match up meant that the game doesn’t go against the teams conference record. The bulldogs won the game when Alex Randall ‘18 stepped up to the plate and got hit by the pitch to force in the winning run and lift the team to a 5-4 victory. In the first game, starting on the mound, Patrick Vinckier ‘19 threw 2 ⅔ innings. Picking up the win, Rhett Stahovec ‘18 closed out the game pitching the final 2 ⅓ innings. Blake McRae ‘19 got intentionally walked to load the bases, causing Matthew Staelgraeve ‘18 to deliver the tying run on a hit to right field. Also contributing, Joshua Alverson ‘19 with a two run single, Matthew Boeve ‘19 with two hits and Kaden Stively ‘19 with two hits.
“The first game we battled the whole game and finally broke through at the end the second game we just came out flat “said Joshua Alverson ‘19.
Game 2: Starting on the mound was Caleb Czarnik ‘20 who struggled and didn’t make it out of the first inning, relieving him, Blake McRae ‘19 and Dario Bollini ‘18 finished the rest of the game. The Bulldogs ended up losing 12-1 in a 5 run mercy, they hurt themselves by committing errors that cost them runs on defense, while only contributing one run offensively.
Going 1-1 on Saturday moved the team’s record to 7-3 with an upcoming series against the Warren Cousino Patriots playing at home Monday and Thursday and going on the road on Tuesday.
Cameron Kemp ‘19: Hoping to continue their success, the Baseball team played yet another home game this time against the Warren Cousino Patriots. Being an in conference game, the game counted towards the team’s previous 3-1 conference record. On the mound, reliable ace pitcher Kaden Stively ‘19 pitched outstanding throwing a complete game, four hit shutout leading the bulldogs to a 2-0 victory. Nathan Rinke ‘18 hit a double and came around to score, Matthew Staelgraeve ‘18 hit a single and contributed an RBI, and Matthew Boeve once again with two hits.
“Our defense played good and made plays, Alex Randall worked hard behind the plate for me and led us to the win.” said winning pitcher Kaden Stively ‘19.
This game moved the Bulldogs record to 8-3 and 4-1 in conference. Still to come this week, they look to finish Cousino away on Tuesday and Home on Thursday.
Cameron Kemp ‘19: On Tuesday, April 24, the Baseball team played Cousino in the second game of a three game series. This time they traveled to Cousino to face the Patriots. Pitching for Romeo, stud pitcher Christian Smith ‘18, pitched a flawless 4 ⅔ innings while fanning 9. Smith ‘18 led the team to a dominant 14-1 victory in a 6 inning mercy. Matthew Boeve ‘19 came up with a multiple hit game for the third time in 4 games, coming up with 2 more hits and 4 RBI’s. Both Alex Randall ‘18 and Blake McRae ‘19 contributed with 3 hits a piece, while Matthew Stealgrave ‘18 drove in one while doubling twice. This game moved the Bulldogs record to 4-1 in conference and 9-3 overall.
“We carried a lot of energy throughout the game and we did what we practice to do,” Boeve said. “We put the ball in the right places, fielded our positions, and it led us to a 14-1 victory in 6 innings.”
The Bulldogs won another series with the 14-1 win and look to sweep Cousino on Thursday, April 26 at home.
Cameron Kemp ‘19: The Baseball team finished their series April 26 against the Cousino Patriots on Thursday at home. Playing the third and final game of the series, the boys wanted to sweep the Patriots taking all three games. A loss would hurt their previous conference record of 4-1. Although the Bulldogs lost 6-5, toeing the mound, Nathan Rinke ‘18 who went 5 ⅔ strong innings while striking out 7. Relieving him and finishing the game, Rhett Stahovec ‘18 pitched 1 ⅓ innings and struck out 2. Offensively, Blake McRae drove in two runs and came up with three hits, while Eric Meldrum ‘19 doubled and Matthew Staelgraeve ‘18 tripled.
“We didn’t play as well as we should have, but were going to try and bounce back tomorrow against Richmond,” outfielder, Matthew Staelgraeve ‘18 said.
This 6-5 loss moved the Bulldogs record to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in conference. Friday provides a chance to boost their record with an away game against Richmond.
Cameron Kemp ‘19: On Friday, April 27 the Baseball team finished their week with a game at Richmond. This game happened to be a non-league game and a one game series, which meant not impacting the teams 4-2 conference record. On the mound, Patrick Vinckier ‘19 started the game and led the team to the 6-5 win while making it through 5 ⅔ solid innings. Relieving pitchers, Dario Bollini ‘18 and Matthew a Staelgraeve ‘18 shut the door closing out the sixth and seventh innings. Offensively, Matthew Boeve ‘19 got on base three times, and Blake McRae ‘19 came up clutch with a two out, go ahead two run double to put the Bulldogs up 6-5 in the seventh inning.
“We came out rusty but we kept stringing up good at bats and putting pressure on their defense,” starting pitcher, Patrick Vinckier ‘19 said.
This game moved the teams record to 10-4 overall and still 4-2 in conference play. Upcoming this week are games against Henry Ford on Monday, April 30, Tuesday, May 1, Wednesday, May 2 and Bloomfield Hills at Comerica Park on Thursday, May 3.
